May is here and that should mean spring and it has turned that way, we had a week with weird weather but now all seem to be gone and the sun is here. We are out sailing still and we have about 3 more weeks to sail before I need to start a new job in Amsterdam. That is going to be pretty exiting. today was one of those days with hardly no wind, sun high up and felt warm in the face, finally May is here. 🙂
My crew has grown and I am so happy to have these two guys on board. 🙂
We sailed for a get together with our Swedish friends and their boat in Enkhuizen. Its a lovely town located in the lake of Ijsselmeer and from the 1300. We been here many times but for our friends it was the first. We found a market with bargain prices on ropes. Everyone that has a boat ropes are extremely expensive. We bought some and now we have new ropes on the boat as our was old and hard, so hard they were barely bendable anymore. We are happy sailors now.
Tomorrow we continue sailing together with our friends in the lake exploring new adventures.
See you around
During the last winter we took care of a dog called Cola, we are now proud owners of Cola and today we got him home. He is a schipperke and are 5 years old and such a sweetheart. These dogs were from the beginning dogs chasing rats on the Belgian barges on the rivers. This is a true friend to Melvin as well and they are lovely together. I call them big and small. A new chapter in life begins with Cola as well by my side.
Thats Melvin I talk about, my beautiful strong, lovely rottweiler. My best friend and follower in life. Thought I would share this video on him while get knocked out on Bay of Biscay on our crossing. How good can you sleep on the waves?
Looked out the porthole this morning but could see nothing… Land is gone!! Pontoon is gone!! There is no stern on the boat!! NO wait a minute… So freakin foggy there was nothing in sight… When the fog cleared up later I managed to get some nice pics of the boat in the very lonely winterharbour. I also managed to squeeze in a quick stop at Bagel and Beans in Zwolle. In a week we are planning to set of towards Amsterdam and after that nobody really knows. We would like to go south in the end of the year if we have all the things we want and need on our list….. And as you boat people know that list never seems to end even though you might cross something off once in a while…. I guess thats the charm ♥♥♥
- Water maker ( Portable like Berkey filter is also awsome)
- Steering pedistal
- Water heater ( ours is a hole in right now)
- Spinnaker ( not the most important but would be great so hoping for a sponsorship)
- Repair kit to our Perkins 4.108
- New sailing gear
- Sunglasses ( sponsor anyone?) 🙂
- Bigger anchor ( we discussed his and it might be a good idea)
- Inflatable SUP ( these are awesome when on anchor to get to shore)
I do miss Amsterdam a bit right now, we went up north for the winter to get some peace and quiet and now its been quiet enough. But its very nice and lovely up in Over Ijssel and I recommend any sailors to visit it when around. A bit more to do in the summer though… The best Harbormaster in Netherlands is located in Buitenhaven , Kampen, and that’s not a lie, he got an award a few years ago and he deserves it big time, his second assistant harbormaster is also the most humble man you can imagine. I think its his time to get the award next time.
We are planning our trip down south towards Amsterdam but we cannot make up our minds when to go. The winter came again with ice and minus degrees and that’s not what I had planned. So standing outside steering right now is not really one of my favorites options, but its the most cozy to be out as it is no one else out and the lakes are for ourselves. Buckle up with loads off clothes, warm tea, coffee and the heater on full speed and we should be alright.
When is your best time to sail?
Melvin showing off his gang plank.♥ Next pictures shows the construction.
When you live aboard you kind of have to be creative at all times and find solutions on stuff you never thought you would need to even think of when living on land.
We live with a Rottweiler onboard an even though he is the smallest one we ever had he is still 40 kg and to save his hips and our backs for the future I hereby present to you:
The dog gang plank a la sailing yacht style. 🙂
Now he can jump down himself when needed and it only took 20 candy’s to get him to understand what he was going to do :). I think he likes it. Well he can go up by himself to of course. 🙂
This one now functions as a gang plank, higher seat for the table and its also our massage bench. 🙂
Hello world. Here I am sitting with my little friend Cola and eating a kind of breakfast/lunch. Bagels and Beans must be my absolute favorite café in The Netherlands. Always fresh food and nice people working there. And the most important thing is that on all Bagels and Beans dogs are welcome. They even give the dogs their own water bowl and dog candy. That’s service and total happiness for us dog people when our four legged friends can come along and get threatened like everyone else. The rain is pouring down outside so we better stay in today sipping coffee. 🙂 Doing some work when possible as the server is totally doing its own thing today.
I love animals and I love my rottweiler Melvin more than life itself. He his true to the gam ant anytime thats for sure. Happy, sad, down or hurt, he knows it and always helps you out. I love you Melvin.♥
