Easter sailing and a force 8

We decided to go sailing for some days when the weather allowed on Saturday. The sun was up, wind from the back and the current with us, we did 9 knots and it was great. We decided to go to Urk, a old island in the lake of Ijsselmeer and we are still here in writing moment due to a force 8. It came in yesterday and it has not stopped since, it picked up today and the boat was rocking in the marina. Everyone was up checking fenders and the ropes. We lay great as always when the husband always ties for storm. Urk is a lovely fishing village that use to be a island back in the days, now its connected o the mainland but you can feel its been a island really. The view out on Ijsselmeer is breathtaking sometimes. Its a very christian and during Easter they dress up nice and go to church, some even up to 4 times a day! So many churches around here. You still see some in traditional Urker clothing. The season has not started yet but some boats are out but Urk is dead quiet, in the summer its blooming with pubs, restaurants and ice cream stores that are open.

Harbour VS City Coffee

Just a random post with one of my favorite things in the whole world. Coffee. I like to drink coffee especially with others and chat for a while, maybe with a snack or a piece of  pastry. At the harbouroffice you can get a decent coffee for only 70 cents and that’s a bargain. At bagels and beans in the city you get a very big latte for 3.75 euros.

My wallet says please go to the harbor office but my mind says go to the city.

Where do you want to be fancy?

Chocolate cravings

I had the cravings from hell today and all I want to eat is just chocolate and more chocolate, I have barely eaten any real food yesterday and today. So I dug into the galley and made some awesome sticky chocolate cupcakes with coffee frosting and coconut and these peanut butter stacks. They are all gone now and tomorrow I try and make some more because these badges just got to good.

Cozy candles and a word lesson

I love candles, tea candles are the best on a boat as they don’t stick up high or fall down easily. What I do like most with them is the cozy , warm feeling it gets anywhere you are. Its sure something special with candles and they seem to have a magic power.

I always have a stack of candles on the boat and every day I lid about 10 candles in the winter time just because the cozyness 🙂 I think I just made up a new word there, that happens once in a while. Tonight I found myself sitting looking into the candles and thinking about my grandfather,Willem ( Wim) He was the greatest man I ever known and I miss him everyday. He passed away 2006 but it seems like yesterday. He was my hero and I was his schatje which he always said and that means baby, sweetheart in street language. Schat in Dutch means treasure and that what he meant as in Swedish he always called me skatten which means treasure.

Sorry folks I slipped away there for a while, the post originally was about candles and what they mean to me+ some pictures. Well you came to know my grandfather Willem and learned some new words in foreign languages. Your welcome for all this knowledge I give you here. 🙂 You never know what you end up with when visiting this blog.

Harbourmaster no 1

You know that either you done something stupid or you are awesome if the harbour master shows up in your home 🙂 We are just awesome and Arnold is a great guy who always are helpful so of course we have become good friends. Look how Happy Dan gets when he arrives. That means also that we are going to drink a lot of coffee. I thought I was a coffee junkie but you never met Arnold then. 🙂

The harbour master Arnold came on a visit. Many cups were to be drank. coffee

Navigators

A navigation table has the purpose of helping the sea charts lay down proper so you can read them, plotting and knowing where you are. But let us all be honest here, it might look like a navigation table, but its not. Its all the other things except the charts. VHF, AIS, Navtex, gas alarm sensor, radio, inverter and other panels as well as books and my office stuff. Why you might wonder?… And the answer is easy,

No one uses charts anymore! And if they have one they have no idea how plotting works. They might even read the chart it upside down. I had the luck to marry a man of the old school kind. He is young in his mind but he knows all these things that no one knows anymore. Like plotting its he and the fishermen out there. I never really use the charts as now days most of the boats has a electronically plotter up there. If all electronics would be wiped out you might find yourself in a dangerous or unpleasant situation when you might would had the knowledge handy of real plotting.

Most of the time this is my area where I work, blog and sometimes watch movies so its also used for puttign my drinks on as well as my bowl of popcorn 🙂

Food onboard

I love my galley in the boat and it is great to make food in. My husband asked me when he rebuilt the galley what my request were and I made a list hoping I would get half of the stuff on it. He managed all on the list and a little extra as well. Great stove with a great oven, carbon fiber surface, spice locker, new faucet, automatic light in all lockers when opened as well as led light strip with dimmer and last but not least red lights for the night sailing. When you have a good galley its fun to cook and I always say that no matter if you are tied up to the quay or out sailing you should always allow yourself to eat good food.

Baking is one of my passions and today I made some nice lemon cupcakes with cream cheese frosting and some small breakfast bread with poppy seeds .Pasta is a favorite on board as well as mini pizzas which is great to make and throw in the oven while sailing.

We make all our food our self and avoid half fabricate which mostly just contains Hugh amounts sugar and other bad stuff. So all the below pictures you see is food and baking we do either out sailing or tied  up in port.

Bring back the child in you

Its important to never really grow up, especially not in the mind. At least that’s my opinion, it just seems like that kids have more fun, exploring the world and all colors from a total another perspective. a more open perspective. I still try to explore and try out new things and see for myself. Never forget who you are and and always be you and no one else or who someone tells you to be.

So when I heard that Kermis was in town I decided I must go there. Its a tiny travelling amusement park for kids but I felt I needed a boost of some kids fun. So I met up with my dear friends and their 2 kids and we spend money on totally unnecessary things like winning stuffed animals, and you know what? We did. 🙂 The kids were happy as ever and when a kid is happy, I am happy.

Red Red vine…..

Its weekend and I have spent it with our boats neighbors, they are just an amazing couple. Tied up next to them is a pleasure and now when spring comes we can share a bottle of vine or two together. Ended up with a lovely French red vine this weekend.

Cheers! 🙂

Spring time

Spring is here soon, no frost anymore in the night and Easter is around the corner. Kampen is full of flowers blooming and it was lovely strolling through town and the park this morning with Melvin. D  was doing a photo shoot the whole way 🙂
